Mission started with communication problems. RW did not work, but Dass saved the day by providing us with the Sidewinder program.
With that thing sorted out, we took off with the break of dawn from the cv, and headed W to our patrol area.
While patrolling, we heard on the text buffer that northern patrols were engaging many bandits. Not having to wait long, dots appeared on our 12, slightly higher (we were at 20k, which is higher a zeke should be). Droping tanks and drawing out our katana swords, we charged the contacts.
4 F4u's appeared flying a beautiful 2 pair formation. GA ordered me and Swap to take the left pair and in we went. The pair came down on me trailing. Sliding a bit to the side, the pass me HO and I get a few degrees advantage turning after them. The did not take the bait and exttended keeping their speed up. I look around and realize that all other vikings were a bit N of me and I'm fighting those 2 alone.
Going defensive, I'm swirrling with the 2 F4u's for some really hair raising situations. They were really good, and well co-ordinated. watch the screen-shot how they co-ordinate an attack from crossing directions. Right out of the text book.
1st bandit attacks and goes high. 2nd one goes in while
1st is reversing,
attacking from different directions.
Now Swap joins our little dance and the pressure is reduced a bit. Now the two fights are merging and it's a one big furball. I'm trying to land on a f4u's 6 but GA gives me a 6 call and dives after my attacker. I break off. Thx GA! I'm reversing to stay close to GA. His bandit is extending, but a high one is dropping on him. I send some tracers from d1.0 to scare him off and it works. The F4u pair is extending.
Now we have a few sec to get orgenized. It's Dass and Easy fighting the high pair, me and Swap a bit lower and GA under us recovering. Swirrling again. Now I manage to get a 90 deg interception on a bandit. he pulls high and I go up cousiously not to stall. He is dropping and I get my first good shot oppertunity. Missed.
I run down after him as he is gaining on me fast. Cheking 6: DAMN! his wingman in riding me.
I go into a vertical barrel roll with his tracers all around me. It worked and he is thrown forward. I watch his passing close near my right wing and pull fast for the snapshot.
Got 2 pings as I sprayed him, but he and his buddy are safly extending away. Lucky bastards! :)
I go back to help the others with the other 2 F4u's. Looking to the side I see a lot more new dots. Don't know if they are friends or foe and no time to find out. (on recording, they turned out to be F4U's that attacked out fleet as we were fighting.)
Don't know what happened to the other guys in the meantime, but when I got back to the fight EasyKill was now where to be seen and Dass was smoking bad. Again going defensive and evaiding a close attack by BnZing F4U. I break under him taking a ping and go right under burning Dass on his way down.
Before I know it, GA and Swap go down as well in smoke.
Now It's just me against the 4 original F4U's and at least one more that has joined from those who attacked our cv. I manage to hang on in there for another wild minute, breaking, rolling, barrel-rolling, twisting till I got dizzy.
But that was just delaying the inevitable. 1 F4U catches me in a vertical dive and blasts me away: "ping ping boom..." I'm in tower.
Patrolling - Bar patrolls are done in perpendicular to the threat by non-radar planes and in parallel by modern fighhters. Reason is, that if your detection instrument is the eyes, the visibility sideways is much better. Also it's easy, looking low by wing flapping.
