Mission Objective:

Cap HQ.

Events:

Taking off from the CV we form and head ib HQ.
Leveling at 20k, we form 2 bar patrols N-S direction - Red flight E of HQ and Blue flight W, and trying to stay within dot range.

Now this is how pairs loose formation should look like.
Some bigger spread in pair might be better.

After a few minutes patrolling blue formation spots multiple nme dots approaching from W.
Blue formation decides to engage, and red is at full throttle to join. Distance was a bit too long and by the time we (red) joing the fight, blue is in a bad shape. Most of the bandits are already fleeing, but 3 F4U remain to fight. I dive on 2 that are trailing Duvel, but compress almost imediately. So I continue my decent spiraling down over their heads and they split deferent ways. Was too late, Duvel was down.

Seeing most vikings engaging those bandits that run W, I go after the eastern pair that got Duvel. They grab some distance and turn toward me. Avoiding the first I find myself HO with the second, but miss the shot.

This one blows through and runs away. The other one tries to get me and flee, but I avoid his shot and falls on his 6 d500 but too slow to follow. I try the snapshot but the zeke rolls like a boing 747 over 300mph and he dives away.

The survivors (Thumper5, Easykill, Goofy, and me) form over HQ again. After a long partol, we start to get low on fuel. Goofy was forced to leave (RL things :) ) and we loose EasyKill while landing for refuel, due to graphic problems.

EasyKill goes in a fireball, and I refuel.

Thumper went down to refuel first, and just as he's back to the patrol and I land, bandits return.
again those 3 F4U. I refuel and up quickly to aid Thumper. Duvel joined thumper and does a great job at 6 calling for him and giving advice: "go low so Bozon can join the fight and hide in HQ ack". I get to HQ in time to see the F4U flee again and Thumper made it with a left wing fuel leak.

While we form and continue the patrol, The F4u regroup and head back. Tumper5 is turning toward them and lead me by d3.0. He gets entangled and shot down.

The F4u are low but very fast so I take the zeke down and ride the compression at 400mph. I fall on the trailing F4U's 6 at a bit over d400 and spray the bluebird. The zeke can hardly follow the scissors at over 350mph and the F4U pulls away. Only a few sprites and no visible damage.
Later, on AH score-board, I was awarded with the kill. So I must have hit him hard enough to make him crash.

One of the other F4u's turned back to help his fleeing friend. I spot him comming in on my flank and turn to face him as he set a HO pass. We both miss completly, and all bandits bug out.

Now patrolling alone over HQ. Kinda' boring, but 20 min to frames end, those 3 F4u come back!
Now they split to a low pair on my left, and single, a bit high on my right. I decide to take the high one, and again he comes HO... and I thought I was the one supposed to be playing the kamikazi...
I accept the HO and hold him in my sight's dead center. He does the same, and the result:

Now we know that F4u bends a zeke :)
On film I could see some pieces fall off of him as well, but he continued flying.

As tradition goes, all vikings down (and I though for a min I'm going to live though this one, hehe ).

Conclusions:

  1. Not sure if blue formation engaged with advantage or not. Original plan was that one formation spots the bandits and calls in the second, so we engage with numbers. If they had the advantage than exploiting it was in place.
  2. New guys -
Flying with them requires a lot of attention, since they are not familliar with how we fly (formations and pair work) and might be new to AH. This is not bad, we should be helping newbies flying with us, but an effort should be made to explain things during briefing (how we fly formation, how to change tanks, how to find takeoff base...etc).
  3. Pair work -
Was there? We still have a lot of work on that one.
Not all were on squadnights where we have practiced it, and we need both in the pair to be familliar with it. We can learn some from the F4U's, they worked nice together.
Should we consider not counting guests new to AH for pairs? Instead, we fly our way and they tag along?
  4. Zeke -
Now I know why F4u was so succesfull. Not that zeke was such a bad plane, but it could hardly engage the F4u if it was flown smart. Good tactic by allied F4u we encountered - Hit, run, regroup, hit again. Never accepting the furball.

Was fun, survived more than usual, and no damage was inflicted upon HQ :)

Mission accomplished <S>
